Genevieve Moore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. John Scanlan Funeral Home - Pompton Plains on Dec. 27, 2025.
Genevieve Sullivan Moore passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve. A woman of remarkably strong spirit, she was full of life and never placed limits on herself. Throughout her journey, she overcame many obstacles with grace and remained poised in both her disposition and her appearance. Her vivaciousness was most evident in her love for conversation; she was always ready for a meaningful talk with friends, family, or even strangers. She possessed a lifelong youthfulness and an enduring curiosity to learn.

Genevieve was born during The Great Depression, and grew up in New Jersey where she would spend most of her adult life. She was the 4th of 5 children and is survived by Mary and Donald.

As a young woman she worked in New York City as a secretary where she made lifelong friends. During her time in New York she continued her pursuit of life-time education, finally obtaining her bachelor's degree later in life. Her commitment to education evident not only in the careers of her children and grandchildren but also in her own commitment to the ESL (English as a second language) program at St. Anthony's of Butler.

Her early career took her down to Florida where she met her husband Al, who recently left the military to work for a shipping company. They soon returned to New York City, where Al assumed the role of the executive General Manager. During this time Genevieve and Al started their family; Aleen, Elizabeth, James, and William. The family was raised in the idyllic community of Smoke Rise, a place where people felt safe enough to leave their doors unlocked and children could play outdoors until after sunset. Genevieve was a devoted stay-at-home mom until the last of her children were raised and she continued work as an administrative professional.

Al passed away from lung cancer 36 years ago, leaving a family void, with Genevive left to rebuild and enable the family. She pulled the family together, kept the family home and ensured everyone was educated. Mom ensured her children could launch on their own and was ever-present during our challenging life events. She was always willing to open her heart and home to whomever needed support. She has been a longtime supporter of the Catholic church and St. Judes.

She moved out of the family home in her 90's to a senior community that she liked to joke was "for old people." She enjoyed excellent health and vigor until her last few months, driving and living independently while fiercely defending her privacy. She believed deeply in healthy food and wellness long before it was popular, with fitness part of her daily routine. She traveled the world with family and friends; some of her favorite places were Ireland, Paris, and Jerusalem.

She loved and took great pride in her grandchildren-Andrew, Dahlia, Timothy, Kelly, Charlotte, Vivian, and Mathew-and adored her great-grandchildren, Colton and Dalton.

She is survived by two of her siblings, 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather from 10 am to 12 pm on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Scanlan's:Where Life is Celebrated. A funeral service will be held at 12 pm. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
