George Stanford Bason Jr, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was born on December 30, 1936, in Durham, North Carolina to the late George Stanford Bason, Sr and Ruth McPherson Bason.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Robertson Bason "Sandy", of nearly 57 years. He was a proud father to Cameron Bason Smith "Cammie" (Clay) of Dallas, TX, and George Stanford Bason III "Trey" (Chris) of Raleigh, NC. Pop Pop cherished his grandchildren, Margaret Ruth Smith, Sarah Masters Smith, Caroline Robertson Smith, Katherine Eloise Smith, Sally York Bason and George Mills Bason.
After graduating from Alexander Wilson High School, George earned a Bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University. He is a veteran of the US Navy where he earned the rank of Lieutenant and flew as an air navigator. He earned the Navy Air Medal for his service in Vietnam.
After the Navy he worked as a farm equipment salesman until 1969 when he started the development of Piedmont Crescent Country Club and housing development on his father's dairy farm. In 1979, he became a licensed real estate broker and since then worked as a Realtor, Developer and Home Builder. He was a member and past president of the Realtors Association and a board member of the Homebuilders Association.
George is a lifelong Presbyterian, having grown up in Hawfields Presbyterian Church and later a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. He was a devoted member and served faithfully as both deacon and elder. He enjoyed his mornings spent at First Presbyterian in the Men's Bible Study and made lifelong friends there. His commitment to service extended beyond the church, positively impacting many in the community. He is past president of the Graham Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Alamance County Planning Board and the Board of Directors of the Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance Caswell. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for The Presbyterian Home of Hawfields. George served as co-chairman with his wife Sandy for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society's Annual Crusade. He was also a faithful American Red Cross blood donor.
A lifelong resident of Alamance County, George had fond memories of growing up on a dairy farm. One of his favorite past-times was attending NC State Wolfpack football games with his family. He looked so forward to our annual family trip to Duck, NC every year where he was surrounded by a house full of children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He loved his walks down Meadowood Drive and his daily visits in the driveway with his neighbor he fondly referred to as the big guy. He spent countless hours driving around every corner of Alamance County in his wolfpack red tahoe. He knew this county like the back of his hand. In his later years he enjoyed growing roses and tomatoes and sharing them with family and friends.
George's most rewarding accomplishments have been his roles in establishing the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields and building Piedmont Crescent Country Club and Golf Course and housing development.
In his own words: "My greatest blessing in life has been my wife, my children, and my grandchildren. Anything that I might have contributed to making my family what it is makes me very proud."
