George William Bender Jr.

George William Bender, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Kill Devil Hills, NC, on February 16, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on August 1, 1933, in Staten Island, NY, George lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love for his family.

George proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he fought bravely in the Korean War. His valor and commitment were recognized with the awarding of the Purple Heart and the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars.

Following his military service, George dedicated twenty years to the New York Police Department, where he served with honor and distinction. His career in law enforcement was a testament to his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community.

A man of deep faith, George was an active member of Holy Redeemer by the Sea. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as playing golf and traveling, often sharing these experiences with his cherished family.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George William Bender, and Ethel Relyea Bender; his daughter, Karen Pattakos; his son, Timothy Bender; his granddaughter, Emily Bender; and his four sisters, Ethel Donnelley, Alice VanPelt, Doris Demenchuk, and Edythe Goodacre.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Denise Bender, who stood by his side through life's many adventures. He leaves behind his children: Denise Hartford of Redbank, NJ; Christopher J. Bender (Maureen) of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and Gerilyn Rabinowitz (Michael) of Tom River, NJ. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: George Fischer (Rosemary), Eric Fischer (Jacqueline), Veronika Kauffman (Noland), Christopher Bender, Jr., Timothy Bender, and Zachary Benevento (Aysneur). He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Colette Fischer, Georgiana Fischer, Thea Kauffman, Kaia Benevento, and Roza Benevento.

In accordance with George's wishes, no services will be held. At a later date, he will be interred at the family plot in New York, where he will rest in peace among those he loved dearly.

George William Bender, Jr. will be remembered for his courage, his sense of humor, his dedication to family and country, and the love he shared with all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched throughout his remarkable life.
