George Cornwell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dawson Funeral Home, Inc. on Apr. 22, 2025.
BONITA SPRINGS, FL. – George W. Cornwell, Jr., of Wellsville, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92 years old.
Born in East Liverpool, May 16, 1932, he was a son of the late George W. Cornwell Sr. and Isa "Pat" Owens Brown.
A 1950 graduate of Wellsville High School, George spent many dedicated years working at the former Sammis Power Plant in Stratton, Ohio. Deeply committed to his community, George served as the Past Exalted Ruler of the Wellsville Elks Lodge #1040 and was an active member of the Wellsville American Legion Post #70, the Wellsville Eagles Post #772, and the Wellsville Masonic Lodge #180. Known affectionately as the "go-to guy," George had an unwavering desire to help others-always ready with a solution or a helping hand. Outside of his civic life, George found joy in riding his motorcycle, target shooting, and playing cards. He cherished his time spent with his wife at their winter home in Florida and was a faithful member of both the Wellsville First Christian Church and Anchor Christian Church in Bonita Springs.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Carol Duffy Cornwell; daughters: Carrie Cornwell of Bonita Springs, FL; Debbie May of Hammondsville, OH; and Karen Schmitt (Stephen) of Mount Vernon, OH; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his sister, Rheta Archer, of Pittsburgh, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Cornwell; a brother, William Cornwell; son-in-law, James May and stepfather Earl Brown.
Friends may visit Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Pastor Mark Blakeley will conduct a funeral service Saturday, April 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.
Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in memory of George Cornwell Jr. can be made to the Wellsville First Christian Church, 831 Main St, Wellsville, OH 43968.
