George Davis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapel Memorial Funeral Home - Waterbury on Mar. 20, 2026.
George Daniel Davis, Sr. of 120 Clowes Terrace, began his eternal rest on Friday, March 13, 2026, after a brief illness. He was the widower of Sonia "Clem" Davis.

George was born September 29, 1941, in Camden, North Carolina, to the late Rev. John Clayton and Maggie Ann (Turner) Davis. He was raised and educated in Fentress, Virginia, and moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, until he moved to Connecticut in 1962. George was employed by Scoville in Naugatuck for over 25 years and High Meadow in Granby, for over 67 years.

George was the minister of music at his Mt. Zion church, where his pastor was Elder Elmond Gibbs. George had a love for God and music that was unmatchable. He was an original member of The Soul Lifters, The Trumpets of Joy, and the founder of the group The Mighty Earth Angels, which he started in 1981 with his children and nephews. George always said, "If God don't get the glory, you might as well get somewhere and sit down!" He also stressed to everyone to "put God first!"

Those who will cherish his memory and continue his legacy are, five daughters Brenda (Horace) Dunn, Meriden, CT, Jennifer (Shawn) Elder, Piedmont, SC, Georgia (Kenneth Hare) Davis, CT, Lashaunna (Carlton) Davis-Torres, Springfield, MA, and Vicky (William) Rainey, Helena, Montana; two sons George Daniel Davis Jr., and Michael Montgomery, Waterbury, CT. One brother, Reverend Elwood L. (Addie) Davis, Elizabeth City, NC, and two sisters: Pattie L. Overton, Allentown, PA, and Thelma Lewis, Waterbury, CT.

George also left to cherish his memory, Louise Wooten, a loving and caring companion. Louise stayed by George's side until the very end.

George left 18 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, great–nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was predeceased by a son, George "Bump" Whitehurst; six brothers: Reverend Walter, Minister James, William, Fred, Cardwell, and Charlie Davis; and five sisters: Marion Davenport, Jessie M. Gibson, and Minnie, Rose, and Clara Davis.
