George Amos Deer, 71, of Mt. Gay, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Logan Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 30, 1953, he was the son of the late Butler and Lucy Thompson Deer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Graham, Dorothy Williams, and Mona Collins; and his brothers, Eugene “Bo,” Cecil, David, Darrell, Jimmy, and Dale Deer.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Ann Deer; his son, Shawn (Melissa) Deer; two daughters, Shannon Orso and Jamie (Ernie) Green; grandchildren, Austin Deer, Trent Orso, and Alyson (Cody) Maynard; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Addison Rylee Deer and Rowen & Reed Maynard. He will also be lovingly remembered by his faithful furry companion, Smokey, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
George was a proud member of the UMWA and attended Mudfork Freewill Baptist Church. He especially treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who brought him his greatest joy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025, at Akers - James Funeral Home in West Logan, WV, with visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m.
