Joann Nunley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snyder Funeral Homes, DeVore Chapel on Feb. 28, 2026.
Joann Nunley, age 80, of Sunbury, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 26, 2026. She was born on May 25, 1945, in Mount Gay, West Virginia, the beloved daughter of the late Harlan and Anna (Vance) Hall.

On December 5, 1964, Joann married the love of her life, James L. Nunley. Together they shared more than fifty-three years of devoted and loving marriage until his passing in 2018. One of the greatest testaments to their life together was the home they built as a family in Sunbury in 1979, a true labor of love where everyone played a part.

Joann was a 1963 graduate of Logan High School in West Virginia. She dedicated nineteen years of service as a bus driver for Columbus City Schools before retiring. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a faithful member of Northgate Community Church for more than forty-six years. Joann deeply cherished her church family, especially Pastor Bill Stephens and his wife, Amy, who were among her closest friends for more than fifty years.

Known for being both fun and ornery, Joann was equally known for her loyalty, forgiveness, and deep love-especially for her family and her two cherished "fur-babies," Petey and Patty.

She is survived by her children: Sherri (Doug) Downey, James Nunley, David Nunley, Steve (Linda) Nunley, and Anna (Tracy) Rollins. Also surviving are her seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and her dearly loved sisters, Betty and Delcie. Joann was especially proud to have the rare and joyful honor of both her first grandson and her first great-grandson being born on her birthday.

The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to her son's, James and Steve, for the many years he lovingly served as her caregiver, and for the countless sacrifices he made out of devotion and love.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Snyder Funeral Homes, DeVore Chapel, 637 N. State Route 61 at Route 3, Sunbury, Ohio, with Pastor Bill Stephens of Northgate Community Church officiating. Burial and graveside prayers will follow at Trenton Cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joann's name to Northgate Community Church, 51 Fourwinds Court, Sunbury, Ohio 43074.

Snyder Funeral Homes, DeVore Chapel, is honored to serve the Nunley family during this time of need.
