George Arthur Doup

BELLVILLE: George Arthur Doup, age 69 of Bellville passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025 in OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital following a short term illness.

He was born February 22, 1956 in Mt. Vernon to the late Edward and Sylvia (Miller) Doup. George was a proud 1974 graduate of Clear Fork High School, where he ran track and played the drums. His love for music followed him throughout his life-he played with a group of friends from school, forming a local band that hosted unforgettable house parties. His younger sisters still remember being enlisted to clean up the evidence before their parents got home. Later, he continued to play drums for the Sons of the American Legion and AMVETS in Bellville, keeping the beat alive in both music and memory.

He built a successful career in telecommunications as a large equipment operator, working for companies like H&L Utility, Town and Country, Henkels & McCoy, and Palmer Enterprises. His work installing fiber optics took him all over the country, and there wasn't a highway, backroad, or diner across the 50 states that he couldn't tell you how to find. George loved the journey just as much as the destination.

Later in life, George served as Sexton at Bellville Cemetery for seven years, a role he took great pride in. He quietly went out of his way to make sure regular visitors could always access their loved ones' graves-clearing paths and shoveling snow without being asked. It was one of many ways his tender-hearted nature showed through.

George was also a proud member of the Tower Hill Gang-a tight-knit group of friends who gathered at their cabin. He loved tractor pulls, worked on farm equipment for fun and attended the National Tractor Pull in Bowling Green annually. A racing fan, he enjoyed NHRA races, and events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Whether he was listening to country music at Jamboree in the Hills, fishing for walleye on Lake Erie, throwing horseshoes, cheering on OSU, the Bengals, or Clear Fork teams, George brought energy and heart to everything he did. He kept newspaper clippings of the Clear Fork Colts' championship runs. A lover of classic 70s rock and loyal viewer of shows like NCIS, MASH*, Bonanza, Band of Brothers, and Yellowstone, George appreciated stories of grit, loyalty, and adventure, and when it was time to say goodbye, he'd always flash a grin and say, "See ya around, like a doughnut." George was curious, funny, ornery, sensitive, and stubborn-sometimes all at once. He was never afraid to say "I love you," and his warmth and sense of humor were unforgettable.

He is survived by his daughter Amber Doup (Brian Wilson) and her mother Julie Dillon, with whom he kept as a close friend, his son Nicholas Doup (and preceded in death by Nick's mother Lisa Kvochick), three grandchildren Hayden, Hadley, and Haisley Wilson; siblings Carolyn Brook, Donna (John) Moore, Ron (Rebecca) Doup, Ina (Dennis) Flenner, and Phyllis (Mike) Patterson; along with many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a brother-in-law William Brook.

The family will host a Celebration of Life reception Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 2-6 pm at the Bellville American Legion Pavilion. A private graveside service will be held at the Bellville Cemetery on August 18, 2025. Memorial donations in honor of George may be made the Bellville American Legion.
