George Gama Obituary

George M. Gama, 60, born June 18, 1965, tragically passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home in Gobles, Michigan where he has resided for the last three years.

Parents Audrey (Formanski) Gama and George Gama are deceased and buried in Erie, Pennsylvania. George is survived by his son George Gama of Goshen, Indiana along with two brothers Mark (Celeste) Gama of Pottstown, Pennsylvania and Matthew Gama of Columbus, Ohio.

George was active in sports in his school years excelling in football, softball and javelin. An avid outdoorsman, George enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. Watching his beloved Steelers and grilling on weekends was something he took pleasure in with others. George was a bibliophile who relished the works of W.E.B. Griffin, Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy along with other military history-related books. His love for reading stemmed from his mother and they spent countless hours discussing books, cooking and local Erie history. George was proud of his heritage both Polish and Romanian and spent innumerable hours on the website Ancestry searching for information.

Upon graduation from high school, George joined the Marine Corps. While initially working as a Machine Gunner, he decided to serve his country as a Scout Sniper. SERE school, jump school, Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques Master (HRST) followed along with other training he felt necessary to have in service to his country. George served onboard the USS John F. Kennedy in the MARDET where he assisted in burials at sea and other ceremonies assigned. He was fluent in the Korean language both oral and written. George was selected to appear in Supercarrier (1988) to perform the burial at sea scene which made his mother very proud. His greatest personal military service achievement was as a Riverine Assault Craft captain while stationed in Virginia. George was a rifle expert and sharpshooter, receiving many decorations/plaques for his service.

While stationed with the 6th Marines at Camp Geiger in Camp Lejeune, NC, George took part in Operation Just Cause 1989-1990. This operation would have a profound impact leaving emotional wounds and scars that never fully healed. Not long after returning home, George left the Marine Corps after serving honorably for over 8 years. He had accomplished a lot and given all that he had. After leaving the Marine Corps he worked in various jobs with his favorite being the Hunting/Fishing Manager for Galyan's Trading Company in Ohio and Indiana. George became an over the road semi driver and instructor before retiring later in life.

The family requests that if you are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress related to your service in the military, please seek help by calling the Veterans Crisis Line 988 then press 1. You will be honoring George along with countless other Veterans and family members.
