SWANTON- George Gilbert, age 81, passed away on Wednesday January 31, 2024 at the Northwestern Medical Center with his family by his side.
George was born in St. Albans on December 19, 1942 to Mahlon and Marie (Bean) Gilbert.
George was a graduate from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and went on to be a member of the Vermont National Guard. He worked for Eveready Battery company for 35 years, where he retired from. George married Ann Simard on August 8th, 1970. George was an avid hunter and outdoorsman in his younger years and passed the passion onto his children. He had a love for deer and duck hunting, fishing, all while he was teaching others about gun safety and muzzleloaders. There were many events at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge where he was a proud member and volunteered his time doing demonstrations. George was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and the Free and Accepted Masons 76 Lodge #14. George also enjoyed woodworking and caring for his beloved vegetable gardens.
George is survived by his brother, David Gilbert of Ocala, FL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Jackie Simard of Lyman, ME; his children, Donald Gilbert and his wife Laura of Swanton, Mark Gilbert and his wife Nola of Highgate Springs, and Marie Schaefer of Litchfield, NH; grandchildren, Makayla Gilbert and significant other David, Kyle Gilbert, Nicholas Bouchard and wife Karissa, Oliver Gilbert, Lucien Gilbert and Ivan Schaefer, Katrina Tumpney, and Cici Schaefer; great grandson Reid Johnson; nephew, Joseph Simard and Tracy Gilbert; niece, Sally Richie, and their families.
George was predeceased by his parents, Mahlon and Marie Gilbert; wife Ann (Simard) Gilbert; son-in-law, Kurt Schaefer; and nephew, Robert Simard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Franklin County Home Health and Hospice, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Franklin County Rehab Center for the care George received.
Friends & family are invited to George's life celebration to include a visitation on Tuesday, February 6th, 2024 from 10:00AM-12:00PM with a funeral service following at 12:00PM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
