George DaCosta Griffith, affectionately known as Costa or Joe to many, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 15, 1946, in St. Lucy, Barbados, to parents Hezekiah and Eileen Griffith, George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life touched the hearts of many.
George was baptized at St. Clement's Church in Barbados and raised with strong values of faith, family, and community. In the 1970s, he migrated to the United States in search of new opportunities and later proudly served his adopted country in the United States Army. After his honorable military service, George embarked on a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked as a Letter Carrier for 30 years in Canarsie, Brooklyn. While there, he became a familiar and trusted presence throughout "Route 45," forming countless friendships along the way.
A longtime resident of Rosedale, New York, George shared a loving marriage with his devoted wife, Michaela Lange, and together they raised two wonderful children, Rohan and Nathalie Griffith, who were his pride and joy. He was a cherished grandfather to Keira and Aiden Griffith, and Julian Mallett, who brought endless joy and laughter to his life.
He is also survived by two siblings, Sybil Boyce and Vivian Griffith, and predeceased by his four other siblings, Phyllis, Ralph, Elizabeth, and Erma Griffith, all whom he held dear in his heart. George also leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Vanessa Griffith, son-in-law, Derrick Mallet, brother-in-law, Henderson Boyce, sister-in-law, Joan Griffith, nieces and nephews, Shareba and Tazara Griffith, Justin and Jayla Boyce, Jason and Janelle Griffith, Martin Boyce, Marguerita Boyce, Ashley Bada, many cousins, including Henderson, Herwood, Neville, and a host of other loved ones.
George will be remembered for his strong personality, unwavering work ethic, and the kindness he showed to everyone he met. He had a passion for playing and watching cricket and was an avid sports fan, cheering on his favorite teams-the Kansas Jayhawks, New York Yankees, and Manchester United. Known for his love of life, George never met a party he didn't like and always brought energy, laughter, and joy to every gathering. His wisdom, humor, and generosity left an indelible mark on his family and community.
"Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day-unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear."
