In the quiet morning hours of January 5, 2025, Dr. George Russell Hanna passed peacefully at his home in Stumpy Point in the company of his loved ones. He was affectionately known as "Poppy" or "Grandpa." His was a life well lived!
He was a lover of a good cup of coffee, a "little something," beautiful sunsets from his back porch, stargazing, carving, reading, "moldy fig music," family and friends. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; a slow morning, good conversation, a culinary adventure, cigars with the guys, a "Ralph run" on the golf cart, carving something beautiful, fishing, poetry, playing the ukulele, and cutting a rug in his younger years. If you knew him, you loved him. If you spent time with him, you probably heard a song being sung, a tune being whistled or a poem being recited. Poppy loved to share his knowledge and have a spirited debate. He was always interested in what was happening in his loved ones' lives. He was an encourager, mentor, and a friend to many.
He spent many years being a mentor to students as he taught the next generation of doctors. He was a professor and medical doctor of neurology at The University of Virginia. He also served as a Doctor for the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Although he had many adventures in his time, his greatest adventure was when he met Joan Scott on a blind date in Montréal. Smitten with her, they married and shared 62 beautiful years of marriage. Together they raised three exceptional women.
He is survived by three daughters Stephanie Bauman (Kent), Deborah Pollard (Wayne) and Naomi Midgett (Robby). Eight grandchildren: Nicolas (Tasha), Kara (Devlin), Anna (Bobby), Lee (Elizabeth), Dustin (Olivia), Daniel (Amanda), Bailie (Forest) and Janie and eleven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind siblings Donald Hanna, Judy Krause and Patrick Hanna.
George was preceded in death by the love of his life Joan Scott Hanna, as well as his brother Michael Hanna and sister Jeannie Berger. His life was full and well lived. He will be truly missed and will live on through his loved ones and their memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Salvation Army, Hillsdale College or a charity of your choice. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring.
