George Woodrow Jackson, 90, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by honor, intellect, faith, and devoted service to his country and family. He was born on February 2, 1935, and from an early age demonstrated the discipline and character that would shape his remarkable life.
George graduated from C. E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1953. With a natural aptitude for academics and a love for learning, he continued his education at Louisiana Tech University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Mathematics in 1964. That same year, he completed officer training at the United States Navy Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, embarking on what would become a distinguished and enduring military career.
George proudly served in the United States Navy for 38 years, from 1957 until his retirement in 1995, achieving the rank of Commander. His service spanned decades of global change and challenge, including his honorable service during the Vietnam War. Throughout his naval career, George exemplified leadership, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. He earned the respect of his fellow officers and sailors alike, not only for his competence, but for his steady presence, integrity, and sense of duty. His retirement marked the conclusion of a career that reflected both personal sacrifice and profound patriotism.
In addition to his military accomplishments, George remained devoted to his community and his faith. He was a faithful member of First Methodist Church in Shreveport, where his quiet strength and steadfast beliefs guided his life. He was also a proud member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, maintaining lifelong bonds with his fraternity brothers and carrying forward the values of fellowship and honor.
George was preceded in death by his parents, whose guidance and support helped shape the man he became.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara S. Jackson, who stood faithfully beside him through the many seasons of his life, and his son, Mark George Jackson and wife Yuliya R. Jackson of Sterling, Virginia, who carry forward his legacy of strength, intelligence, and integrity.
George Woodrow Jackson will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, respected naval officer, and man of enduring principle. His life was one of quiet distinction—marked not by fanfare, but by steadfast commitment to duty, family, and faith. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the example he set, and the honor with which he served.
