George “Marvin” Johnson passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and children on December 12, 2025

He was born on August 19, 1937 to Ernest and Nora Johnson in his childhood home in Prescott, Arizona and was one of eight children: May Jean (who died in infancy), Merlene Cope, Anna Jean Fleming, Ernest Johnson, Myrna Johnson, Linda Bloom, and Carol Lynn Shaw. Myrna and Linda are his only surviving siblings.

Marvin grew up in the Phoenix and graduated from Phoenix Union West High School in 1955. He was proud to work alongside his father as his “associate” in the family air conditioning business before serving a mission in the New England States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning, he attended Phoenix College and later graduated from Arizona State University.

His professional career included serving as General Manager of Newberry’s and later as Director of Purchasing for Motorola, where he worked for 33 years. After retiring, he and his wife Mary owned and operated Paraiso Skin Care Salon for the past 25 years.

Shortly after returning from his mission, Marvin married Sandra Pearl Bales and soon thereafter joined the Air National Guard. He was a veteran who served during the Berlin Crisis. Together, Marvin and Sandra had six children. Sandra passed away at a young age, leaving Marvin widowed at the age of 36.

Nearly four years later, he married Mary Rubalcaba Gonzales, who had two small children. They were sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple on September 8, 1978. Together they blended their families and raised their children: George (Tina), Michael (Erica), Marsan (Blake) Horrocks, John (Shelley), Darrin (Teresa), Devin (Kim), Aarron (Chalyce) Gonzales, and Paul (Stacy) Gonzales. Three years later, they welcomed a daughter, Nicole (Chad) Schaub. He leaves a legacy of over 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marvin dedicated his life to service and held many callings in the Church, including serving in the bishoprics of Chandler 3rd Ward and San Marcos Singles Ward, and as Bishop of the Galveston 1st Ward. Of all his callings, he recently shared that his favorite was his final one—teaching Primary children who were preparing for baptism. His greatest joys in life were his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff at both Chandler Regional and Ironwood Cancer and Research Center who cared for Marvin with such compassion. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Mikhail I. Shtivelband, whose medical brilliance and genuine compassion helped extend Marvin’s life beyond expectations.
