George A. Mackie, 81, of Leominster, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at home.
He leaves his beloved wife, Angela (Mellonas) Mackie; his devoted children, Kimberly Schuster and her husband Todd of Leominster, and Timothy Mackie and his wife Julianna of Boston and Nantucket; his grandchildren, Brayden and Sophia Schuster, whom he adored; his siblings, James “Jim” Mackie, of Fitchburg, Dennis Mackie of Westford, and Carol Weston and her husband Steve, of Berlin, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Patricia “Patty” Bouchard of Gardener and John “Butch” Mackie of Narragansett, RI.
George was born in Fitchburg, son of the late John Mackie, Sr. and Alice (Rajala) Mackie. He graduated from Fitchburg Memorial High School in 1962, prior to attending the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a focus on engineering.
He had a lengthy career with New England Telephone/Verizon for 31 years before he began consulting for a Japanese fiberoptics communications company as a specialist in fiberoptics engineering for 16 years. While working on his second career, George cherished the opportunities he had to travel extensively around the U.S., Canada and Japan. He retired in 2012.
George loved sports, both as an athlete and as a spectator, he particularly loved the local New England sports teams. He had a special passion for playing golf and was a proud member of the Monoosnock Country Club where he enjoying playing golf and socializing for many years.
George had a special relationship with his wife Angela “Ang” of 60 years and took pride in being a father and grandfather to his children and grandchildren and was a mentor to those around him. He was also referred to as the ultimate gentleman.
His family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Care Central VNA & Hospice (https://carecentralvnahospice.org/about/donate/).
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours between 10am-1pm on Friday, April 18, 2025 at Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd, Fitchburg. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 pm, with burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg.
A celebration of George’s life will follow at Manoosnock Country Club at approximately 2pm.
