George R. Mason, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and servant of God, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on December 7,1939, in Detroit, Michigan, George was the third of four boys, to George and Helen Mason. Tragically, George's mother, Helen, passed away when he was just six years old. His father later married Evelyn James, and together they raised George and his brothers. After moving to Wayne, Michigan, George and his brothers were invited by neighbors to attend Newburg Baptist Church. At the age of nine, George made the life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior, setting the course for a life dedicated to God and service. His passion for music ministry began early as he participated in church music programs. After graduating from high school in 1959, George enrolled at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, to pursue a ministry training. It was there that he met Carol Elder, a gifted pianist. George led the singing, and Carol played the piano for the Mission Prayer Band at BBC. Their shared musical talents brought them closer, and on August 6, 1960, they were married, beginning a partnership in both ministry and life that would last 64 years. Their ministry journey started humbly, offering their home basement to help start Lakeview Baptist Church, where George led the singing and Carol played the piano. In 1962, they moved to Oklahoma City, where George was called to serve as music minister and youth director at Independence Avenue Baptist Church. Over the course of nearly seven years, George and Carol nurtured their ministry and family, which grew to include their two children, Rhonda and Ron. In 1969, George was called to serve at Western Oaks Baptist Church in Bethany, Oklahoma, and later at Meridian Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He continued his dual role as music
minister and youth director, faithfully serving in both capacities. In 1977, George and Carol moved to Windsor Hills Baptist Church, where George took on a variety of roles, including
leading the singing in an adult Sunday school class, contributing to the choir, and serving as a deacon.
In 1990, George and Carol returned to Western Oaks Baptist Church, where George served as music minister until 2008. They then returned to Windsor Hills Baptist Church to be near their
grandchildren. During this time George served as a volunteer Chaplain at Baptist Medical Center. In 2014, they joined Southwest Baptist Church, continuing their devoted service to
God and loving their church family. Alongside his ministry, George worked in various sales positions, where he found joy in connecting with people and meeting their needs. His career, though rooted in sales, was deeply intertwined with his passion for helping others, making it more than just a job. It was his way of showing care, making others feel valued, and building lasting relationships.
George's greatest legacy was his unwavering commitment to God and his family. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a caring grandfather, and a fun-loving great-grandfather. Whether he was called "PaPa", "Gramps", or "PaPa George", his love for his family and his steadfast faith were constant sources of inspiration to all who knew him. George was preceded in death by his father, George Mason, his mother, Evelyn Looney, his brothers Bob, Don, and Norman Mason, and his son, Ron Mason. He is survived by his wife Carol; his daughter Rhonda and her husband Craig; his grandchildren Chris and his girlfriend Shelby, Nick and his wife Haley, Whitney Trimble and her husband Stephen; and his four great-grandsons Landon, Grayson, Carson, and Rayland.
The family expresses their deep gratitude to all those who have loved and supported George throughout his life. His faithfulness, compassion, and unwavering love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the lives of those who knew him.
We will all love you forever, PaPa George.
