George Alton Montgomery, III, age 78 of Waverly Hall, GA, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA.
George was born August 9, 1947 in Americus, GA, the son of George Alton Mongomery, Jr., and Mary Alice Chitty Montgomery. His early childhood was spent in Plains, GA, until he moved with his family to Columbus. He became a 1965 graduate of Columbus High School and afterwards attended Columbus College and Columbus Technical School. Upon the passing of his father-in-law, George took the reins of operating the Newberry Supply Co. in Waverly Hall, GA. He and his wife gradually grew the business to include numerous area car wash facilities, and hardware, grocery and gas station businesses in Waverly Hall. He was a general contractor and builder of homes, subdivisions and commercial properties. Never one to retire, he remained active, eventually expanding into the Automotive Dent Removal business and the manufacture and installation of Custom Security Gates. In 2004 he established Oak Hill Cemetery.
George was a former councilman for the Town of Waverly Hall, serving from 1980 until 1984. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and in recent years enjoyed spending time operating his tractors and maintaining his cemetery and property. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Mary Wallace Montgomery of Waverly Hall; a daughter, Alice Perez (Randy) of Gulf Breeze, FL; a son, Wally Montgomery (Jamie) of Franklin, TN; three grandchildren, Safia Perez, Lola Perez, and Hudson Montgomery; a sister, Eve Couliette (Danny) and two brothers, David Montgomery (Shelly), and Dan Montgomery, all of Columbus, GA; also several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 12673 GA Hwy. 85, Waverly Hall, GA. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
