Shirley Jewell Adkins, age 69, passed away Friday, October 24, 2025, at her home in Hamilton, GA with her husband by her side.
Shirley was born July 10, 1956, in Frankfurt, Germany, to CSM James Gorin Lowthorp and Marianne Theresia Hochstrasser Lowthorp. Growing up in a military family, she traveled extensively with her parents until her father became a Post Commander of Fort Benning, GA. She was a 1974 graduate of Kendrick High School in Columbus, GA, and attended Columbus State University. Before retirement, Shirley worked as a paralegal in Columbus. She had artistic talents of both painting and writing. Her hidden talent was revealed when she won the community chili cookoff a few years back. Shirley spent her retirement offering a haven to cats in need. Her favorite time of year was the Christmas season, and each year she spread the Christmas spirit to local children with extensive toy and clothing donations. Her altruism also extended to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the ASPCA.
She is survived by her husband of thirty years, Gary Alan Adkins of Fortson, GA; a son Matthew Brinkley (Lindsay) of Apison, TN; a step-daughter, Taylor Brown (Matthew) of Hamilton, GA; a sister, Dianne Masciovecchio (Guido) of Columbus, GA; and three grandchildren, Camden Brinkley, Micah Brinkley and Adelynn Brinkley.
The family will hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, they request those who desire, to make contributions in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the ASPCA.
