Obituary of George J. Mulligan
George Joseph Mulligan, better known as Chief to everyone who loved him, passed away on May 21, 2024, in his home in Thiells, NY. Chief lived to age 94, and in those years, he was a loving husband to Vera (who predeceased him in 2013) and their children Ann, Jean, Pat (Peggy), and George (Tammy). Chief treasured family time - whether it was time at the beach together or long dinners around the dining room table. He loved just being together.
Chief was not only a loving father but also a gentle and kind grandfather to Katherine (Jeff), Tom (Christie), Kevin (Denise), Kelly, Abby (Fabrizio), Connor, and Elizabeth. He found immense joy in their laughter and was always there to watch them play in the sand and swim at the Jersey Shore. As his family grew, he was blessed to meet his four great-grandchildren - Liam, Maren, Conor, and Elby- and a fifth, Zoe, who was born just a week before his passing.
Chief's professional life was marked by his dedication and passion as a New York City firefighter. His commitment to the work and people was evident as he rose through the ranks, becoming a Battalion Chief in 1970. Even in retirement, his thirst for knowledge remained. He read The New York Times, The Economist, The Atlantic and others, always eager to stay informed, grow and share with others.
His love for his wife Vera was a constant in his life, and until her passing, they enjoyed their retirement years in the Florida Keys and the Jersey Shore. Chief often said, "All you need in this life is your health, a little bit of money, and someone to share it with." He was very blessed to have all three, and those who loved him knew how lucky they were to have him in their lives.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 23rd from 3-8 pm at the TJ McGowan & Son's Funeral Home, Garnerville, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for George on Friday, May 24th at 11
am at the St. Gregory Barbarigo Church, Garnerville. Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery Nanuet. In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Chief's name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
