George Myers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 30, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that the George Hunt Myers family announces his passing on August 19, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 93. Born on September 11, 1931, George grew up in DeKalb, Illinois. He worked in the farming fields and canneries of Del Monte during the summers and graduated from DeKalb High School. The University of Iowa Field House lured George to Iowa City. He joined Phi Kappa Psi and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in science. He also excelled in wrestling, winning a Big Ten Wrestling Championship and second place in the NCAA meet. Home from college, and having moved back to Rochelle, Illinois, George married Anne Kingma in 1953. They moved to Ames, Iowa, where George received his electrical engineering (EE) degree from rival Iowa State University.

George's EE degree led him to St. Joseph, Michigan, where he began his first engineering job with Heath Company, and later retired from Whirlpool Corporation after a long and gratifying career. In St. Joseph, he and Anne raised their family. His passion for sports continued with golf, handball, biking, and running. George volunteered for Little League, St. Joseph High School wrestling, the YMCA, the Whirlpool running club, and countless running events. His nicknames included Mr. Clean, The Runner, and "Iowa" George. He was also known for providing personalized marathon pace charts to his many running friends.

In 1998, George and wife, Anne, retired to Siesta Key, Florida, to their Polynesian Gardens villa. George kept active in sports, including handball, running, kayaking, and exercising at the YMCA. He enjoyed his last year at Aravilla Independent Living in Sarasota, Florida. George delighted in his Polynesian, YMCA, and Aravilla friends and families.

George is survived by his wife of seventy-two years, Anne Myers; children Karen (David) Laetz, Peggy Myers, and Joseph Myers; daughter-in-law Sabrina Myers; grandchild Taylor Deibert; sister Joan Buxton; and brother-in-law Jack (JoAnna) Kingma. Preceding him in death were his parents Harold and Gladys Myers, and son Michael Myers.

A small family service will be held in Ashton, Illinois, at Washington Grove Cemetery. "For a Better Us", donations may be made to YMCA of Greater Michiana or YMCA of Southwest Florida.
