GEORGE "BIG GEORGE" NELSON, SR. Obituary
George "Big G" Nelson Sr. was born on May 24, 1968, in Evansville, Indiana. He was the son of Chiquita A. Nelson and Frederick Nelson.
George was raised in Evansville and graduated from North High School in 1986. While attending North High School, he met the love of his life, Monica Wilson (later, Monica Nelson) and they later married in 1989. George became a father to George B. Nelson, Jr. in 1990, and to Brockelle S. Nelson in 1992.
Wanting to explore new opportunities, George moved his family to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1995. After several jobs in the food industry, George pursued his passion for cooking by starting a restaurant in his home near West 37th Street and Graceland Avenue on the Northwest side of Indianapolis. For seven years, he opened his home to the community serving fresh soul food for affordable prices. In 2003, he embarked upon a succession of brick-and-mortar restaurants including locations on West 26th Street and Harding Avenue (2003-2007), West 27th and Rader streets (2007-2014), West 26th and Dr. M. L. K., Jr. streets (2015-2019), and East 34th Street and North College Avenue (2020-2024). After tremendous success, George and his family returned to West 26th and Dr. M. L. K., Jr. streets where Pa & Ma's Backyard BBQ is currently located. George's legacy was about extending love through cooking, mentorship, and community.
George B. Nelson, Sr. departed this life on August 21, 2024, at the age of fifty-six years two months and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chiquita Johnson and Frederick Nelson, and sibling, Darlene Kirkwood.
He leaves behind a beautiful family including his wife, Monica Nelson; children, George Nelson, Jr., Brockelle Nelson, and Lisa Nelson (M. George, Jr.); grandchildren, Grace Nelson and George Nelson, III; siblings, Willie Nelson and Frederick Nelson, and a host of relatives and extended family, beloved employees and co-workers, and many close friends from all walks of life, both near and far.
