George Niemeyer Obituary

George Edward Niemeyer, 89, of Wapakoneta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Springview Manor in Lima, surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 6, 1936, at his family's home on Washington Pike, George was the son of Gustave Leonard and Elsie Matilda (Buddemeyer) Niemeyer. A lifelong resident of Auglaize County, he lived a life marked by service and deep devotion to his family.

A 1954 graduate of Blume High School, George earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from The Ohio State University in 1959, and, later, a Master of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1969. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965, including time stationed in Korea.
George taught science at Lima Shawnee Schools and was a dedicated lifelong farmer in Washington Township. He married Connie Lou Phillips on November 11, 1961, at The First United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta. They were blessed with three children: Craig (Susan Keller) Niemeyer of Grand Junction, CO; Lynne (Rick) Sulc of Dublin, OH; and Kirk (Tami Keller) Niemeyer of Lima, OH. He was a devoted father to his children and a proud grandfather to Tatum, Tristin, Ryan, Nathan, and Annika. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is survived by Connie, his wife of 63 years, his children, grandchildren and sister, Donna Jean Niemeyer Mann, and was preceded in death by siblings Martha (Verlin) Strasburg, Robert (Mary Rohr) Niemeyer, Julia (Vernon) Paul, Ronald Mann, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Doris Phillips Gott.

George was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta and was confirmed in 1950 at the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville by Rev. D.A. Bode, D.D. His confirmation verse, John 2:5–6, reflected the way he lived his life - in quiet faith and faithful action.

In high school, George earned the State Future Farmers of America Degree. At Ohio State, he was a member of the Dairy Cattle Judging Team and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was a life member of the OSU Alumni Association, a charter member of the Wapakoneta YMCA, and active in the Wapakoneta Lions Club. He enjoyed boating, skiing, traveling with family, and faithfully supporting his children and grandchildren at countless games and events especially traveling to Yale and Lehigh to support them at their college football games. A lifelong Buckeye fan, he never missed an opportunity to cheer on Ohio State.

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 24, from 9:00 am to11:00 am at Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, 11l0 Lincoln Avenue in Wapakoneta, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am and interment at Greenlawn Cemetery afterwards. I was associated with George as a friend and a teaching colleague for over 20 years. I have many fond memories of him, and I know he will be sorely missed. I was looking forward to spending time with George the next time I visited Wapakoneta. I am deeply sad regarding his passing. May he rest in peace.

My dad was the photographer at George and Connie´s wedding. He asked me to be his assistant and I happily agreed. It was a lovely wedding for a very nice couple.
