George David Orsinger, 90 of Nevada, passed away peacefully at the Israel Hospice House in Ames on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. He died of congestive heart failure and pneumonia.
George was born October 9, 1932, in LaSalle, Illinois, the son of Louis Vincent Orsinger and Alberta Pauline (Thiemann) Orsinger. George graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School and the local Junior College with an Associate Degree in Drafting. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan from 1954 to 1956. After serving, George returned to LaSalle where he was introduced by good friends to Dorothy Jagodzinski while participating in the Westclox Bowling League. He married Dorothy in February of 1960 in LaSalle, Illinois at Saint Hyacinth Catholic Church.
Prior to serving in the Army, George worked as a Foreman at the Del Monte Canning facility in Mendota, Illinois. After his service, George worked at Westclox in LaSalle, Illinois for several years. He joined Sundstrand in LaSalle in 1966 and moved with the company to Ames, Iowa in 1971 where he worked as a Draftsman and later a Pre-Production Supervisor. During this time, he 'moon-lighted' on the side, selling Electrolux vacuum cleaners. In 1983, he and Dorothy moved to Yuba City, California, where together they developed a highly successful Electrolux sales and repair business. In 1994, they moved back to Nevada, Iowa and started an All-American Home Dealership in Ames. George retired in 2004.
After retiring, George became a driving force for the Nevada Senior Citizen Center fundraising and helping in the design of the building and interior. He and Dorothy enjoyed activities at the center including afternoons playing cards and other games, monthly pot-lucks and New Year's Eve celebrations.
George and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and valued family vacation time. They prioritized annual family vacations traveling to favorite lakes in Minnesota and Canada where they camped or rented a cabin and enjoyed fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, canoeing and other recreation. The family also visited many State and National Parks over the years. With Electrolux and also All-American Homes, their success in business awarded them many trips; favorites included Niagara Falls, Montreal, Hawaii and the Bahamas. In retirement, they also enjoyed vacations to their time-share in Branson, Missouri.
George was an excellent card player and loved playing cards with friends at the Senior Citizen Center and also in the evening with neighbors and other friends. He was a member of the American Legion, Izaak Walton League and Golden Kiwanis for many years. He enjoyed nature and being outdoors; fishing, hunting, canoeing, boating, walking, gardening and bird watching. George loved attending his grandchildren's sport games and band and choir concerts and rarely missed one. He enjoyed attending I-Cub games and watching NFL and MLB games, golf, and fishing shows on TV. George also enjoyed old westerns especially those featuring John Wayne. He enjoyed being in the kitchen cooking meals and baking old family recipe cookies and fruitcake. Most of all, George had a 'love' for life! He loved his God, country, family and spending quality time with them, especially at the holidays. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather plus a loyal friend to all!
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; his daughter, Kim (Stephen) Sampson of Nevada; his son, David (Ann) Orsinger of Altoona; six grandchildren: Sara (Robbie) Lydic, Marie (Stephen) Justin, Daniel (Madeline) Orsinger, Erika Sampson and her Fiancé, Brody Miller, Margaret Orsinger and Gabrielle (Landon) Dowell, and three great-grandchildren: Ruth, Eloise, and Dominic.
George was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, James; four grandchildren: Emily Orsinger, John Orsinger, Francis Orsinger, Clare Orsinger; three great-grandchildren, Micah Orsinger, Alex Gerard Justin, Faustina Thérèse Justin; his brother: Louis Vincent Orsinger; his sister: Alberta "Mickey" Vitale and several nieces and nephews.
