Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - Tidewater Drive Chapel on Jul. 20, 2024.
On July 17, 2024, George John Pappas fell asleep in the Lord.
Preceding George in death are his beloved wife Bessie K. Pappas, daughter Melanie P. Georges, only sister Athena P. Griffith (Russ), and first wife Lillian Hardison Pappas, who gave us our beloved Melanie.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Christina (Tony); granddaughter Anastasia Georges (Andy); great grandchildren Sonny and Leni; brothers Gregory (Stella) and Pete (Nancy), and extend family of many nieces, nephews and cousins. Special to George was the relationship he had with Ken and Evelyn Bellas and their children Demetrios and Eleni. He was born in Greenville, NC on November 17, 1931. George was the oldest son of John and Frosa Pappas who migrated here from Cyprus, Greece. His family moved to the Bronx then Newport News and eventually settled in
Norfolk, VA, where they lived and raised their family. He started his career with the Virginian then transitioned to Norfolk and Western, and he retired from Norfolk and Southern after 42 years.
George Pappas was a family man. If he was gardening, he was separating the fruits of his labor to share with his siblings and neighbors. He spent his life with his loving wife Bessie, quietly and respectfully helping those in need; from cars to food to money, they never said no. He loved his cars and loved sharing his knowledge with those around him. His favorite hobbies include music and art (he was very talented with oils). He loved to watch football, old movies, and, for a while, engaged in the used car business. Saturday night dinners out with his siblings and then children were a staple during the week.
George was a life-time member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was a quiet, soft-spoken man who loved his church and was very proud of his Orthodox heritage. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Father for his guidance during this difficult time.
Family was very important to George. On Sundays, after church, "football and coffee", as the family calls it, was mandatory, in their Sunday best, rooting for their family teams. When there was no football, they were at Virginia Beach, taking over a small "city block" with their beach umbrellas. George was well loved and will be greatly missed.
His daughter Christina would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Michael Perry. Martha Alberti, and nurses at Virginia Beach Jenn Care who were always available to give their advice, instructions and encouragement as she cared for George. They made her feel comfortable because they truly cared for him. A special thank you to Dr. Archie at the Broch Cancer Center who gave the family time.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral or St. Judes. A Trisagion Service will be held at Hollomon-Brown, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at 7 PM. A service will be held at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 11:30 AM. Condolences to the family may be offered at www.hollomon-brown.com
