George A. Passes

George Anastasio Passes, 87, of Manasquan NJ died on April 15, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.
George is survived by his wife, Loula Passes; daughter Eleni; son Philip and daughter in law Carolyn and their children Alexander, Jordynn, and Christian.
George was born June 28, 1934 in Megalo Horio, Greece to Eleni and Anastasio Passopoulos. After immigrating to America alone and as a teenager, George found a way to attend high school. He ultimately graduated from Gardner Web College and Guilford College in North Carolina, receiving his undergraduate degree. George continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received graduate degrees in English and psychology.
George and his wife moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1966 where they raised their family. George worked as an administrator and guidance counselor at Burlington County Vocational and Technical Highschool until he retired.
A common theme George often shared was his forever gratefulness for the opportunities America provided. Having arrived on the shores of the United States alone and as a teenager, George personified perseverance and determination in creating a meaningful and productive life. George enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was often seen walking through town to the beach in Manasquan.
In lieu of flowers, George had requested donations be sent to the Elliott/Oakes Scholarship, Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs, NC 28017. George founded this scholarship to help students in need, as a way to commemorate the guidance and support the Elliott and Oaks families provided him when he came to America.
Visiting will be Monday 11:00am until 12:00pm at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 2200 Church Rd., Toms River, NJ. Funeral services will begin at 12:00noon at the church followed by an interment at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. Silverton Memorial Funeral Home 2482 Church Rd., Toms River is in charge of the arrangements.
