Ted A. Mendenhall

Ted A. Mendenhall, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on February 17, 2026.

Ted was born on November 17, 1946 and grew up in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He attended college at North Carolina Wesleyan University and Guilford College. He served as a United States Marine in the Vietnam War. Ted was a licensed land surveyor and retired from Basgier & Associates in Virginia Beach as Vice President and Head of Surveys.

Ted was predeceased by his loving wife, Sheri Mendenhall, and Mother, Florine Bremer. He is survived by his son, Traver Mendenhall (Christina), daughter, Amy Mendenhall (Ty Henry), Stepbrother, Ron Bremer, Stepsister, Dona Shumate, brother-in-law, Michael Lynch, and grandchildren, Sara, Esmarie, Joe, Kyle, and Luke.

Ted was an unfailingly kind and good man – a hard worker, devoted husband, and proud dad and grandfather. He had a deep curiosity and avidly pursued his many hobbies, including astronomy, telescope-building, photography, travel, and kayaking. He was a ham radio operator (call sign K4BXR) who built his first station at the age of 10 and connected with people around the world for the rest of his life. Ted loved good music and was a gifted musician who taught himself to play the guitar and banjo beautifully. He was a proud Marine, who enjoyed reconnecting with the men who served alongside him and their families. Ted loved good books, good movies, and a good family party, delighting most especially in his five grandchildren.

Ted's values aimed true, and he lived them steadfastly. He was a soldier and a believer in peace, a builder and an artist, a tinkerer and a witness to the infinite and the beautiful. There are chapters and chapters of his memory to cherish.

A memorial gathering will take place for Ted on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts, Laskin Road Chapel, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ted's name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
