George Edward Scruggs died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, in Pearland, Texas. He was 80 years old.
An avid outdoorsman who was fond of sports, George leaves a lasting legacy to his sweet, extended family and countless others he crossed paths with.
Born on November 9, 1944, to Charles and Thora Scruggs, George enjoyed a one-of-a-kind childhood. Among his fondest memories was playing outside with his friends and brothers, who he playfully harassed by shooting his.22-caliber rifle past them. A football and baseball player at Alvin High School, he had the honor of being a teammate with baseball Hall of Famer and Lone Star State legend Nolan Ryan.
George later became a member of the Carpenters Union and took a liking to slow-pitch softball, a sport in which he got to travel across Texas and celebrate winning state championships. He enjoyed deer hunting with family, loved the Houston Astros, only wore flip-flops until Crocs came along and had notable sweet tooth, especially for HEB Glazed donuts, lemon-filled donuts and Ding Dongs.
He was married to Cheryl Scruggs for 51 years, remained in Alvin, raising horses, chickens and peacocks and loved dogs and cats. He will be missed by his pup Lil Rascal.
As we say goodbye, we give thanks for the life of George Edward Scruggs. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing that his spirit lives on - in the rustle of the trees at sunrise, in the crack of a bat at an Astros game, and in every moment we remember him with love and gratitude.
Dad may be gone from our sight, but he'll never be gone from our hearts.
May his soul find rest, his memory bring us peace, and his example continue to guide us all our days.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Cheryl Scruggs; siblings, Charles Scruggs, Robert Scruggs, and Alice Walters; brother-in-law, Donnie Koster, and sister-in-law, Peggy Scruggs; daughters, Tammie Bean, Billie Dillard and husband, Bobbie Dillard Jr.; granddaughter, Jordan Pleasants, grandsons, Kyle Bean, Jason Bean, and Parker Pleasants; 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Thora Scruggs, Margaret Kent, Elizabeth Koster, Bobby Walters, Gerald Kent, Loraine Scruggs, niece Janet Walters, and nephew, Jeff Koster.

Yesterday

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of George. Although I was not fortunate enough to have known George personally, I do know his wife and she is a wonderful woman and she would marry an amazing man. My condolences to your family as you navigate your lives without the presence of your loved one.
I am so very sorry.
