Gierhard Unger was born in Mexico on January 11, 1960 to Jacob and Helena (Heinrichs) Unger. He was baptized in June of 1982 by Gierhard Neufeld. He married Katharina Knelsen on July 18, 1983. He was a member of New Reinlander Mennonite Church in Hugoton, Kansas. George enjoyed going to the lake, fishing, playing games with family, and, most of all, playing and joking with his 14 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. George passed away Thursday, March 27, 2025 at his home in Elkhart, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his parents, twin daughters, Anna and Tina Unger, a granddaughter, Jayla Smith, one sister, and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Katharina Unger of Elkhart, a son, Johnny Unger and his wife Lana, and their five children: Hannah, Amariah, Leah, Weston, and Lydiah of Elkhart; three daughters: Helena Loewen and her husband Juan, and their two children: Jaelynn Rae and Kayden Jorge of Peace River, Alberta; Annie Reimer and her husband Peter, and their five children: Sylas, Aralynn, Sawyer, Solomon, and Auctavia of Elkhart; and Truide Unger and her two children: Jayven and Layla of Elkhart; as well as five brothers and six sisters.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at New Reinlander Mennonite Church, 1020 E. 11th St., Hugoton. Interment will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, at Garnand Funeral Home 920 E. 11th St., Hugoton. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
