George Franklin White, age 83, of Charleston, WV, passed away on August 3, 2024, in Dublin, OH. Born on April 26, 1941, he led an impactful life characterized by a dedication to medicine and service. George graduated magna cum laude from Marshall College and later earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. He specialized as an Ear, Nose, and Throat, Head and Neck Surgeon. He had an internship at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA in Pediatrics & Internal Medicine.
George served honorably in the Navy as a physician during the Vietnam War, where he was attached to the Marines, showcasing his commitment to both his country and the well-being of his fellow serviceman. As a Lieutenant, he received the Navy Commendation Medal a combat distinguishing devise. His military tenure was marked by a deep sense of duty and excellence in medical provision under challenging conditions.
George was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, OH. He was also a recognized sommelier, merging his medical precision with his passion for wine, which became a significant part of his life. He also loved collecting old silver for medical and wine uses. He was instrumental in helping Shawnee State become a University. In 2021 he was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.
George is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sandra Gohmann; daughter, Margaret (John) White-Calanog; son, Adam Joseph (Carrie) White; wonderful grandchildren, Annie and Emmie White, Peter White-Meridian, and James and Mercy White-Calanog; brother, E Dennis (Betty Ann) White, Jr.; sister-in-laws, Jennifer (Sam) Duff, Rebecca (Chris) Bechhold; brother-in-law, Fred (Krista) Gohmann; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his mother, Rotha Edelman White; father, E D White, Sr.; mother-in-law, Doris Gohmann; father-in-law, Joseph Gohmann; brother, Harold White; and niece, Amy Ann White.
A visitation will be held at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (Northwest Chapel), 10051 Brewster Lane, Powell, OH on Monday, August 12, 2024 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm with a memorial service immediately following at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Shawnee State University, 940 Second Street, George and Sandra White Scholarships for Veterans, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
George White's life was a testament to his robust spirit and dedication to improving the lives of others through both his professional work and personal engagements. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
