Gerald Bloomquist Obituary

Gerald Bloomquist

January 11, 1934 - December 21, 2025

Gerald Bloomquist, born January 11, 1934, in Montreal, Wisconsin, died peacefully at home on December 21 surrounded by family. He lived a life defined by service, dedication and a deep love for education, community and the outdoors.

Gerald graduated from high school in Hurley, Wisconsin, before attending the University of Wisconsin–Superior, where he played on the basketball team and earned his teaching degree in 1955. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and received an honorable discharge.

In 1959, Gerald began a long and meaningful career in education, teaching science in the Spooner Middle School District. For 35 years until his retirement in 1994, he inspired generations of students with his knowledge, patience and commitment to learning. In addition to his work in the classroom, he coached basketball at Spooner High School for 15 years, where he was respected for his leadership, fairness and encouragement of young athletes.

Outside of his professional life, Gerald found great joy in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman who especially cherished fishing trips to Canada, a devoted hunter and an enthusiastic golfer. He also enjoyed cheering on his son at baseball games and spending time with friends, particularly during friendly poker games filled with laughter and camaraderie.

Gerald was married to his loving wife, Donna Magnus Bloomquist, for 51 years. He is also survived by his son, Jeremy (Laura) Bloomquist; his stepdaughter, Melissa Briggs (Bob Gschwind); and his four cherished grandchildren, Cortni, Kyli, Cameron and Karli. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Catherine Bloomquist and his older brother, Roland Bloomquist.

A celebration of Gerald's life will be held this spring. Details will be shared at a later date.
