Gerald Carter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stith Funeral Home - Gallatin on Jan. 13, 2026.
Gerald "Jerry" D. Carter, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born in 1930 on Splawn Ridge to John Wesley Carter and Madge Elizabeth Brown Carter. He spent his early years in Daviess County, where he was active in the FFA and farmed hogs, sheep, and cattle. From 1952 to 1954, he served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an Army Engineer, building roads and gaining a lifelong appreciation for warm winter clothing, especially socks. After returning home from deployment, he continued farming alongside his father.
Jerry met the local schoolteacher at Splawn Ridge, Lois Ann Jarrett, and they were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1955. The couple made their home in Gallatin, where Jerry began working for the highway department. Together they raised four children: Alan, Mark, Paul, and SuAnn.
Jerry took great pleasure in the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tending his beloved garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Madge Carter; his sister, Janet Sue Watkins; and his daughter-in-law, Barbara Carter. He is survived by his devoted wife, Lois; his children, Alan, Mark (Debbie), Paul (Lynn), and SuAnn; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous grand-dogs and grand-cats.
Jerry was a beloved husband, a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Centenary Cemetery or your favorite outdoor charity in care of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, January 19, 2026, at Stith Funeral Home (Gallatin). The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Sunday, January 18th, 2026 at Stith Funeral Home (Gallatin). Burial will follow at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the care and direction of Stith Funeral Home in Gallatin (660) 663-2117. Online guestbook at www.stithfamilyfunerals.com
