Mr. Gerald Boyd Denny, age 91 of Jefferson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 14, 2023.
Gerald was born in Ashe County on October 24, 1931 to the late Charles Gwyn and Hazel Jones Denny. In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Denny, his sister Kaye Lewis and his 1st wife, Hazel Blevins Denny.
Left to Cherish his memory are his loving wife, Willie Lou Cox Denny; 2 sons: Gerald "Jerry" Denny and Kevin Denny. One Daughter: Susan Hattley.
7 grandchildren: Amy, Quincy, Tyler, Chase, Keegan, Kole and Keelan, 4 great grandchildren and 2 nephews also survive.
Gerald graduated from Healing Springs High School in 1949. He was a faithful and dedicated Christian. After growing up in Healing Springs Baptist Church, Gerald became a member of Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and choir director for 18 years.
Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in September 12, 1951 and served until July 11, 1960. He completed his training at Lackland Air Force Base in
San Antonio, Texas. From there he was assigned to The University of Southern California to enter an intensive aircraft and engine mechanical school at the Aeronautical College located at Santa Maria.
After completion of the school in 1952, as well as several other related schools, Gerald became a senior aircraft and engine mechanic, a flight mechanic, a supervisory mechanic and a crew chief on four types of airplanes.
Gerald was assigned to the Air Force Flight Engineer program under the auspices of the University of Illinois, located at Chanute Air Force Base,
Rantoul, Illinois for the academic phase of his training. Much of Gerald's service was spent as a flight engineer and air crew member in the Military Air and Transport Service (MATS) flying their world wide transportation routes.
He was married to the former Hazel Blevins until her death in March of 1960. They were the parents of two children, Jerry and Susan.
After his discharge in July of 1960, he entered Appalachian Teacher's College and graduated in 1964 with a B.S. Degree in Biology and Physical Science.
In 1963, he married the former Willie Lou Cox. They have made their home in Jefferson and have one son, Kevin.
Gerald was a teacher at Ashe Central High School for four years. He then accepted a job with the U.S. Postal Service in Jefferson, retiring in 1990. He was a private pilot and continued to be very much interested in aviation.
Gerald was a friend to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Services for Gerald are incomplete at this time.
