Gerald E. Martin, age 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at Mercy House. Born June 14, 1934, in Franklin County, PA, he was the son of the late Ellis W. and Edna Shatzer Martin.
Mr. Martin was a 1952 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954-1958, where he was stationed in Thule, Greenland. Mr. Martin went on to work at Letterkenny Army Depot as a machinist and crew leader. He retired in 1988, after 21 years of service. He was a former member of Mt. Olivet U.B. Church and Calvary United Methodist Church. He was currently attending Fourth Street Church of the Brethren in Chambersburg. He was also a member of the NRA, and the Letterkenny Rod and Gun Club. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Martin enjoyed hunting and fishing. He took many hunting trips to Canada, Wyoming, Minnesota, Virginia, West Virginia, and Utah. He had a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. A very good day for him was being outside, enjoying God's creation. He also enjoyed shuffleboard, puzzles, and mushroom hunting.
Surviving is his wife, Daphney K. Martin, whom he married on May 1, 2010; two children, Stephanie Keefer (Brian) of Melbourne, FL and Cynthia Gagliardi (Richard) of Melbourne, FL; three grandchildren, Jared Keefer of Melbourne, FL, Chelsea Shoop of Macon, GA, and Hilary Shoop of Anderson, SC; and two siblings, Eloise Martin and Lorraine Spangler both of Chambersburg, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joanna S. Foreman Martin in 2007, two sons, Daniel L. in infancy and Anthony "Tony" Martin, and a sister, Eunice Horn.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024, at 10 AM in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202 where Rev. Harold Yeager will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 3 – 5 PM and one hour prior to the service on Monday in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Mercy House, 730 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren, 260 South Fourth St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
