Gerald F. Murray

Gerald Francis Murray,93, a lifelong resident of Violet Avenue in the Town of Hyde Park, died peacefully on January 20, 2026, surrounded by his children.

Born on August 6, 1932, in the Town of Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late James Thomas Murray and Alvina Zwecker Murray. He attended St. Peter's School as well as the Hyde Park Central School District. Jerry attended Franklin D. Roosevelt High School where he played trumpet in the band and participated in school plays.

He graduated from FDR High School in 1950. Jerry enjoyed working as a farm hand at Val-Kill Farms as a teenager. Jerry served in the United States Army and was stationed predominantly in Northern Greenland during the Korean War.

Gerald married the Miss Helen A. Fitzgerald on November 27, 1955, at The First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie. Together, they made Hyde Park their home and raised their two sons. He was a proud life member of the Fairview Fire Company. Gerald worked as a firefighter first in the Fairview Fire Dept. and later in the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Dept. where he retired as Captain in 1997. Gerald and Helen enjoyed traveling the United States and much of Canada as well as traveling abroad. He enjoyed painting landscapes (which he enjoyed giving to family and friends), was an avid reader, enjoyed trains, and researching the history of local fire departments with his friends.

Gerald Murray is survived by his sons; Daniel Murray (Michele) and David F. Murray, both of Hyde Park; granddaughter, Sarah Helene Baiano (Christopher) of the Town of Poughkeepsie; grandsons, Matthew Murray (Kathryn) of Hyde Park and Michael Murray of the City of Poughkeepsie; great-grandson, Declan Murray; sister-in-law Connee Sibulkin (Lou) of Gilbert, AZ; niece, Colleen Decarlo; nephews, Timothy Murray, James Beckman, and William Beckman.

Jerry was predeceased by his wife, Helen F. Murray, his parents, his brother, Jimmy Murray, and his nieces, Sally Ann Murray and Dixie Lee Tung.

Calling hours will be Friday, January 23, 2026, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Sweet's Funera Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

The Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 10 AM at the Funeral Home with burial to follow in the family plot at Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.
