Harlem, GA – Mr. Gerald Dean Sims “Grandpa”, age 86, of Harlem , Georgia went to Heaven on November 6, 2023.
Gerald served his country in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his 20 years in the Army he served as a Medical Specialist and a Supply Sergeant. He served two tours in Vietnam where he earned the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Medical Badge, and Bronze Star. He also received various other Army commendations, service awards, and medals during his enlistment.
After retiring honorably from the Army. Gerald operated a barbeque stand and later operated Handy City in Dearing, Georgia. When he sold Handy City he purchased an RV and he and his wife Darlene finally spent their time traveling. He especially enjoyed fishing and they would spend the winters in South Padre Island, Texas, fishing and relaxing with other family members. He also enjoyed gardening and riding his golf cart in the woods to feed the deer. He also held the best fish frys around.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Darlene Sims. He will be missed by his daughter: Faye Thomas (Ricky); son: Gerald R. Sims (Debbie); grandchildren: Wendy Powell (Jason), Jeremy Thomas, Tony Sims (Chrystn), Amanda Sims (Ethen), Heather Hood (Jesse) and great grandchildren: Steven Hunter Bradley, Blake and JourneyAnn Powell, Zachery and Logan Sims, Grayson and Christopher Smith, Luke and Levi Hood.
A memorial graveside service with full military honors at the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 1:00 P.M.
