It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald D. Toliver Sr., a devoted family man, trusted friend, and respected figure in his community. Gerald departed this life peacefully on Friday November 15, 2024, at the age of 79. He was the son of the Late Mrs. Geraldine Johnson and Stepfather Henry Nathan Johnson.
Born on August 11, 1945, in Lynchburg, Virginia Gerald was known for his warm spirit, unwavering work ethic, and an ability to inspire everyone he met. After graduating Dunbar High School Class of 1965, Gerald went on to join the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. He later built a successful career in the car industry as a sales manager and transitioned to the trucking industry as a logistics destination operator, earning the admiration of his colleagues and clients.
A man of integrity and generosity, Gerald touched countless lives. He was not only a mentor to many but also a cherished confidant whose guidance left an indelible mark on those fortunate to know him.
Gerald’s greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his loving children, Gerald D. Toliver Jr and his wife, Lorena Ayala Toliver, Kimberly Lynette Reid and her husband, James Reid; Letina Kenyetta Roberts; and Michael Harvey. He was a proud grandfather to Justin Lamont Toliver, Andrea Nikkol Toliver, Semaj Reid, Gerald D. Toliver III, Blaike Mercardo Toliver, and London Reid, and a beloved great-grandfather to Jayden Toliver, Jamirah Toliver, and Jayceon Toliver.
Gerald is also survived by his siblings: Constance Toliver, Wanda Dillard, Greggory Johnson and his wife Jeanette Johnson, Nathan Johnson and his wife Nina, Crystal Johnson, Cynthia Johnson and Tony Johnson and his wife Charity. He was married to Delores Barnette Toliver and preceded in death by Carolyn Coles and Henry Johnson Jr. Gerald was cherished by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His love, kindness and legacy will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In his free time, Gerald enjoyed skiing, football, and basketball, and had an unwavering passion for coaching little league. He approached life with boundless enthusiasm and a warm smile. Whether it was sharing stories with close friends or offering a helping hand, Gerald had a unique way of making everyone feel valued and loved.
A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Sunday, November 24, 2024 from 3:00 until 5:00 PM. A homegoing service will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Fifth Street Baptist Church, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his remarkable life. He will lie in repose one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kimberly Reid, reflecting Gerald’s lifelong dedication to helping others.
Gerald D. Toliver Sr. will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the legacy of love he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Gerald. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts.
