Chesterfield, SC – Mr. Gerald S. Wood, affectionately known as “Squirrel,” age 89, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 1, 2026 from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Reverend Donald Wallace, Sr. and Brent Taylor with burial to follow in the Old Peniel Cemetery.
Mr. Wood was born September 10, 1936 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Hugh Jackson “H.J.” and Ophelia Sellers Wood. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and a member of the SC Army National Guard for many years. A life-long contractor, Gerald was the owner and operator of Wood Construction and was also a former supervisor with Delta Mills. He was a member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as choir director for many years. An avid outdoorsman, Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time in God’s creation.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wood was also preceded in death by his daughter, Ellen Wood Tyner; and brother, William J. “Jack” Wood.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Brenda Johnson Wood of the home; children, Susie Trexler of Chesterfield, SC, Jeff (Toni) Wood of Cheraw, SC, and Amy Stokes (Jeff) Bryant of Society Hill, SC; grandchildren, Drew Stokes, Adam Johnson, and Joshua Caleb (Mandi) Wood; great grandchildren, Zane Johnson, Hayden Wood, Kailey Wood, and Easton Wood; sister, Janet (Charlie) Mewshaw of Florence, SC; sister-in-law, Pamela Wood of Chesterfield, SC; numerous nieces and nephews including Brent (Deanna) Canon of Florence, SC.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield and the exceptional team from Compassion Home Care for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.
