Geraldine V. "Dena" Harrell

Dena V. Harrell, a beloved wife, mother, MeMe, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Dena was the devoted wife of Cecil N. Harrell for 53 wonderful years. Their union was blessed with three boys, Jason Harrell (spouse, Ashley Harrell) of Emerald Isle, Jon-Charles Harrell (spouse, Allee Harrell) of Wake Forest and Carter Harrell (spouse, Leann Harrell) of Youngsville. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship and unwavering support for those they loved most. Also left to cherish her memory are her brother Douglas Viverette (spouse, Janie Viverette) of Wake Forest and many loving family members.

Her greatest joy in recent years was being "MeMe" to her seven grandchildren: Jayden, Malli, Emmarie, Caroline, Charlie, Cameran and Sidney. She cherished every moment with them and loved cheering them on, spoiling them and making memories they will carry with them forever.

Dena enjoyed a successful career in real estate before returning to work at East Carolina University, where she worked in both the Athletic Department and for the School of Communication Sciences & Disorders prior to retiring in 2015. A lifelong East Carolina University fan, Dena was often found on the sidelines cheering on her boys or laughing with her dear friends.

Anyone who knew Dena knew she had a special gift with people. Her warmth, laughter and genuine interest in others made everyone feel valued and at home.

Her door – and her heart – were always open. She will always be remembered as the heart of her family, a loyal friend and the kind of person who made the world feel a little warmer just by being in it.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at 2:00 PM at The Sutherland in Wake Forest, N.C. Dena loved bringing people together so please join the family afterwards for food and beverages.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org/donate or Mercy Chefs at mercychefs.com/donation.
