Gertrude Teofilo Laszewski, 98, of Fond du Lac, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. She was born on June 29, 1927, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Henry Baldauf and Katherine Birschbach Baldauf. Gert graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School in 1945. Just out of high school she worked at Wisconsin Bell as a telephone operator, where she made some lifelong friendships. On May 30, 1951, Gert married Joseph Vito Teofilo at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. They made their home on Center Street in North Fond du Lac, down the street from Joe’s parents, Vincenzo and Mary Teofilo. Together they had five children: Patricia, Barbara, Michael, Thomas, and Marcia. Gert’s mother, Katherine Baldauf lived with them until her death in 1973.The family were members of Presentation of the BVM in North Fond du Lac.
After her husband Joe died unexpectedly in 1966, Gert devoted her life to raising their five children. Before reentering the workforce, Gert completed a program at Moraine Park Technical College focused on general office skills. She worked as the switchboard operator at Combined Insurance from 1967-1982. After Combined Insurance closed, she worked as a switchboard operator at National Exchange Bank from 1982-1987.
On January 23, 1988, Gert married Harry Laszewski at Presentation of the BVM in North Fond du Lac. They moved to Madison to enjoy retirement and to be close to Harry’s family. Harry passed away on Christmas Day in 1994. Gert returned to Fond du Lac to be close to family and friends, and became a member of Holy Family Parish. Gert began working part-time at Advocap in Fond du Lac where she worked well into her 80’s. During that same time period, she volunteered with the Foster Grandparent Program, reading to students at Lakeshore Elementary School and Friendship Learning Center.
In her retirement years in Fond du Lac, she met some wonderful neighbors living on Royal Avenue and on Heritage Court. Gert’s last two years were spent living at St. Clare Terrace, an independent senior living facility, where she became a part of a whole new family. As she was needing more help, she had a caregiver come in to help with some basic needs -- a special angel named Kathy. As her health deteriorated, she resided at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac for the last two months.
Gert is survived by her five children, Patricia Teofilo-Moser, Barbara Abler, Michael (Becky Gross) Teofilo, Thomas (Amy) Teofilo and Marcia Teofilo; three step-children, Christine (Robert) Selk, Matthew (Marina) Laszewski, and Amy (Greg) Meyer; six grandchildren, Roxanne (fiancé, John Ruth) Abler, Anna (Jacob) Loppnow, Aaron Abler, Kathryn (Amber) Lisowe, Noah (Emily Keller) Moser, and Maria Teofilo; two great-grandchildren, Leo and Jack Loppnow; and step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Katherine; her two husbands, Joseph Teofilo and Harry Laszewski; three brothers, Matthew Baldauf, Henry “Hank” Baldauf and Tony Baldauf; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and stepson, Michael Laszewski.
The visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at church at 4:00 PM. Burial will occur in Calvary Cemetery on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of SSM/St. Agnes Hospital, 5th floor and Hospice Home of Hope.
