Gilbert Alnas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 13, 2026.
We are deeply saddened to announce that Gilbert V. Alnas unexpectedly passed away on December 15,

2025.

Gilbert was born on November 17, 1960, to John and Lupe Alnas at the old Hazel Hawkins Hospital on

Monterey Street and was a lifelong resident of San Juan Bautista and San Benito County.

Gilbert attended San Juan School and Hollister High School. He was a San Juan Cub and Boy Scout and

played Little League baseball. He also played Pop Warner football. In high school, he played football, ran track, competed in shot put, and wrestled.

After high school, Gilbert joined the Navy and served as an Aviation Mechanic. After his service in the Navy, Gilbert moved back to San Juan Bautista but traveled the country while working in various trades.

He worked for PG&E at Diablo Canyon before returning to San Juan Bautista. Gilbert was skilled in masonry, cement work, carpentry, construction, plumbing, and jet and auto mechanics. He was also a

member of the local carpenters' union.

Gilbert enjoyed hanging out with Lily, his canine best friend; fishing; traveling; working on his motorcycle; cooking and eating; and spending time with his family and friends. He loved watching 49ers football, Giants baseball, TV game shows, educational and history channels, and movies with his mom and family. He could sometimes be a little crazy and wild, and he was always fun to be around.

Gilbert was the "go-to man" for his family, friends, and community. If anyone had a problem, he was the

first person to call. Gilbert would drop anything for anyone in need. He gave great advice and often taught

you how to do something more effectively and efficiently. He was intelligent and knowledgeable, and you

often learned something from him about a wide range of subjects.

Gilbert is survived by his son, his pride and joy, whom he loved dearly, Zackery Alnas; his mother, Lupe

Alnas, whom he loved and cared for; his siblings, John Alnas (Cynthia), Vera Alnas Clark (Roger), and

Cindy Alnas Smiley; his nieces, Stephanie and Rebecca Alnas, Kali and Mylah Smiley; and his nephew,

RJ Clark, whom he treated and loved like his own children; his great-nephew, Santiago, and great-niece,

Naomi; and numerous cousins and relatives, as well as lifelong friends, including Cindy Velho Alnas and

her granddaughter, Willow. He was preceded in death by his father, John H. Alnas Jr.

Gilbert will be remembered as a great father and a good man with a good heart-for his unconditional

love and for the joy and laughter he brought into the lives of everyone who met him. We will miss his

smile, laugh, witty sense of humor, positive outlook, and kindness. His sudden and unexpected passing

has left our family devastated and brokenhearted.

Rest in peace, dear Gilbert. Your memory will live on in our hearts and in those who shared countless

memories with you. Until we meet again.

A private viewing for family was held on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelsen

Funeral Home. A "Celebration of Life" in honor of Gilbert will be held on February 7, 2028.
