Gilbert Comer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Simons Mortuary on Feb. 21, 2025.
Mr. Gilbert Samuel Comer, Jr., 86, of Peoria, IL transitioned to his heavenly home at 10:25 pm on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at Carle Methodist Hospital.
Gilbert was born on April 27, 1938 in Peoria, IL to proud parents Gilbert, Sr., and Ethel Comer. Upon graduating high school, Gilbert enlisted in the US Army where he honorably serviced for two years, separating in 1957. He married Billie Elliott on August 29, 1960. They shared 53 years of marriage until her death on January 9, 2014. He later married Benita Lewis on April 27, 2016.
Gilbert had a strong work ethic. He was an engineer at Caterpillar for over 36 years. Gilbert didn't rest on his laurels after his retirement from Caterpillar; he went on to work as a beloved crossing guard for over 22 years.
Gilbert had a smile that would light up a room when he entered. He was head strong. He didn't mind helping people. He was very organized, independent and always took care of business. Gilbert was a man of great faith. He was a charter member of New Cornerstone Baptist Church where he served faithfully until he became ill.
Gilbert leaves to cherish his most precious memory his wife, Benita (Lewis) Comer of Peoria, IL; children, Wayne (Theresa) Martin, Troy Martin, Barry Comer, Sidney Paskins, Cassaundra Powell, Regina Walker, Stacie (Larry) Gaines; one sister, Ella Comer; step children, Shawnita Lews, Breanna Lewis, Markeysha Lewis, Iesaha Sims and Jamesha Sims; 30 grandchildren; 38 greatgrandchildren; and a host of great-greatgrandchildren, other relatives and friends. He is also preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jessie and Gary Smith; two brothers, Marcus and Arthur Comer and a grandson, who was Gilbert's name's sake, Samuel Powell.
A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at New Cornerstone Baptist Church where US Army Military Honors will be rendered. Family and friends will gather at 11:30 am. Rev. Dr. Mark A. McConnell will officiate. Gilbert's cremains will be laid at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
