Gilbert Lucero Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Angelus Chapel Funeral Directors & Crematory on Feb. 24, 2026.
Gilbert Lucero, 96, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, in Colorado Springs.

Gilbert was born on February 14, 1930, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, to Tobias Lucero and Flora Gonzales. He was a son, a brother, a twin, a friend, a father, and a husband, and above all, he was such an amazing person. A sweet, kind, and gentle soul.

Gilbert worked throughout his life as a barber, a school janitor, and in furniture cleaning. As a young man, he enjoyed cutting hair, dancing, playing pool, and playing both the guitar and the violin. He never lost his sense of humor, even when life became difficult. No matter the circumstances, he was always ready to crack a joke and brighten someone's day.

More than anything, Gilbert cherished his family. He was married to the love of his life, Rose Gonzales Lucero, for 75 beautiful years. Their love was unwavering. As he sat at her bedside when she passed, he shared words that will never be forgotten: "We never argued about anything… never separated for nothing… She was the perfect woman." Even after Rose went to heaven, Gilbert never lost his spark.

He loved going out to eat and became well known at his favorite local spots, including IHOP and La Casita Mexican Grill. He enjoyed good food, good company, and the simple joys of life. Even at 95 years old, he was still washing dishes, sweeping, and mopping. He always made sure his hair was combed, his face was washed and shaved, and his cologne was applied. He carried himself with pride and dignity every single day.

In his final days, while lying in bed, he called each loved one over one by one, shook their hands, and thanked them for taking care of him, a moment that will forever remain in the hearts of those who witnessed it.

Gilbert is survived by his brother, Tobias, of New Mexico, and his sister, Cecilia, of New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Gonzales Lucero; his son Frank Lucero; his parents, Tobias and Flora; his brothers George, Eliseo, and Joe; and his sisters, Margaret, his twin, and Francis.

Although he outlived his only child, we feel at peace knowing he has made it home and is reunited with his beloved Rose and his son Frank. While he is no longer with us physically, our hearts overflow with treasured memories. As an anonymous author once said, "When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure." Gilbert was the greatest treasure God could have ever blessed us with.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
