Barrington – Gilbert Lincoln "Gil" McCarthy Jr, 75 died Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at his home in Barrington, NH, with his wife Margaret (Peg) Claire McCarthy (Atwood) by his side.
Gil was born on May 18th, 1948 in Rochester, NH, the son of the late Gilbert and Muriel (Lowry) McCarthy. He grew up in Rochester, NH and often shared fond memories of his family, friends, and working at a local farm. He volunteered to serve his country in the Navy and trained at Coronado Island (among other places) before his deployment to multiple combat tours in Navy Special Police, responsible for in-country compound security.
He (and our family) made lifelong friends from his service in the Navy. Gil was combat wounded 3 days before a rotation back to the states with a long and challenging road to recovery. He advocated for other Disabled Veterans but never considered himself disabled, holding himself to the highest of standards in all aspects of life. In addition to his Purple Heart, he received many recognitions including The Gallantry Cross Medal, Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Meritorious Unit Citation and Combat Action and Commendation ribbons.
After time in the Colebrook Post Office, Gil spent decades as an entrepreneur starting many businesses. With a brilliant business mind, Gil's success both in business and life was due to his ability to connect with people and make everyone he met feel special. With businesses ranging from group homes, a video store, and even a testing lab; his true joy was his dairy farm and the simpleness of hard work.
As a loving husband, Gil was rarely seen without the love of his life, his wife Peg. Even in his last years, his children would often joke about how the two were still like love sick high school kids, spending every moment together. As a dad and grandfather, he was the kind of man that would get on the floor to play with kids. He could connect with everyone of any age and loved to tell stories and to laugh. Gil would do anything to help anyone and did not hesitate to sacrifice of himself to do so.
In addition to his parents, Gil was predeceased by his brother Wayne and his grandson Zachary. He is survived by his wife and their loving children and spouses, Tom & Linda McCarthy, Nathan and Stephanie McCarthy, Katie McCarthy, and her wife Jennifer, and grandchildren Joshua, Andrew, Ciana, Michael and Caitlin. He is also survived by his siblings Mike, John, Sandy and Carol.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday 12/10 @ 1:00 at Governors Inn, 78 Wakefield St, Rochester, NH 03867
