Gilbert Selden Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chatman-Harris Funeral Home East on Nov. 12, 2025.
Gilbert Leonard Selden, Sr., affectionately known to all as Chappy, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, in Baltimore, MD, at the age of 81, after a long and courageous battle with dementia.
Born on May 5, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gilbert was the beloved son of Clarence Selden, Sr., and Fannie Mae Showell. He received his education at Bishop Neumann Catholic, which laid the groundwork for his diligent work ethic and commitment to community.
Gilbert dedicated his professional life to public service, working as an Accounting Assistant 2 in the Finance Department for the City of Baltimore until his retirement. Outside of his career, Chappy found his deepest joys in simple pleasures. He was a man who loved taking long walks, soaking in the world around him, and settling in to listen to jazz. Above all, he cherished his role as a devoted daddy and pop, a title he wore with immense pride. Though he did not claim a formal denomination, Gilbert was a deeply spiritual man.
He is reunited in peace with his parents, Clarence Selden, Sr. and Fannie Mae Showell; his sisters B'Ayesha Shabazz and Jacqueline Showell; and his brother Reginald Selden, Sr.
Chappy's legacy of love, commitment, and gentle spirit is carried on by his devoted children: sons Michael Williamson, Sr., Mark Harris, Sr., Gilbert Selden, Jr., and Juan Selden, and daughters Trina Selden and Juanda Selden. He is also survived by his siblings: brothers Clarence Selden, Jr., Charles Selden, and George Showell, Jr., and sisters Hazel Knox and Denessa Witherspoon. Gilbert leaves behind a cherished host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and bonus grands, all of whom brought incredible light to his later years.
