Gladys T. (Holec) Metteer passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2025, at Providence Villa in Sebeka, MN. She was 97 years old. Gladys was born to Vaclav and Mary (Ober) Holec on Sept. 28, 1928, near Dante, SD. She married Harold Metteer on Oct. 9, 1947, in Luverne, MN. Together they farmed in Charles Mix County, SD, until 1967. At that time, they moved to Nimrod, MN, and continued to farm there.
Gladys was a long-standing member of the Nimrod Lutheran Church, the Mary Martha Guild, the Nimrod Hall Association and from 1982- 2025 the Sebeka Auxiliary.
Most of her life, she was a stay-at-home mom and housewife. Her outside the home career included running the Nimrod cafe with Margaret Rathcke. Gladys often worked with her friend, Irene Pederson, catering weddings, planting trees at the Badoura State Forest Nursery, and collecting wild rice. She enjoyed being outside as much as possible. Her many hobbies included sewing, quilting, gardening, baking and cooking. Her granddaughter, Amanda Metteer, reminisced "I don't remember ever going to her house and NOT being fed".
She completed 8th grade in a country school. Gladys started 9th grade at Avon SD high school. She was unable to complete her schooling due to her family needing her home to help with farm work. In 2024, she received her high school diploma, thanks to Providence Villa. A proud moment for her. She always said how much she loved school.
Surviving Gladys are her family; Rhoda (Tappe) Metteer, Jim and Donna (Parady) Metteer, Judy Metteer, JoLynn Weaver, Larry Weaver, Janelle and Glen Swenson, and Jane and Joe Brockpahler, along with 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.
Preceding Gladys in death were her parents, Vaclav and Mary (Ober) Holec, brothers, Emil, Frank, Edward, William, Stanley, and Erest, sisters; Mary, Adeline and Norma; husband Harold; son, Lyle Metteer; daughter, Joyce Hepola; and grandson Joseph Weaver.
The celebration of life will be held at a later date. Her resting place will be with Harold at Camp Ripley Cemetery.
To quote her grandson, Nick Metteer. "97 years of excellence". We will miss you.
