Gladys Elizabeth Ames Peele, a cherished pillar of her community and a beacon of love and joy to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, Virginia. Born on July 2, 1935, in Pungoteague, Virginia, Gladys was a lifelong resident of Accomack County.
The daughter of the late Annie Bailey and Edward Ames, Gladys was a devoted member of St. Mark Baptist Church, where she served with humility and grace as a Deaconess, an usher, and a choir member. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she shared it generously, touching the hearts of many through her service and her song.
She was the cherished wife of the late Theodore R. Peele, and together they shared a love that was a testament to their shared values and commitment. Every niece and nephew knew they had a special place in Aunt Gladys's heart, each bond unique and treasured. Above all, Gladys's heart belonged to her family.
Gladys was lovingly known as "Dump" to her family and close friends. She was known for her culinary skills, especially her corn pudding, dumplings, and the delightful "cherry in the snow" dessert that graced many a family table.
A woman of many interests, Gladys found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She cherished her daily phone conversations with friends, where laughter and wisdom were shared in equal measure. Thurs-day nights were a special time for Gladys, as she delved into the scriptures during Bible study with Rev. Boyd White, always eager to learn and grow in her faith.
Gladys's love for music was profound, and she had a special song for every child in her life. "Jordan on the River" and "I Found the Answer" were among her favorites to sing, and her voice was a soothing presence that could calm any worry or heal any heartache.
The carnival was another source of delight for Gladys, where she could be found playing Bingo with a concentration and enthusiasm that was infectious. She was also an avid fan of her "stories," never missing an episode of The Young and The Restless and The Bold and The Beautiful, which brought her daily doses of drama and excitement.
Gladys's legacy is one of love, service, and the joy of living a life filled with purpose and passion. Her memory will be held dear, not only in the echoes of her laughter and the recipes she left behind but in the countless lives she touched with her kindness and her unwavering faith.
In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
She will be remembered by her nephew, whom she raised as a son, Robert "Bob" Davis; two sisters, Mable Holbrook of Suffolk, VA and Katherine "Irene" Scott of Warrenton, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great, great-nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
