Glen Quakenbush Obituary

Glen Dale Quakenbush died Nov. 25, 2022, of a heart attack in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Glen was born July 21, 1960, in Fairbanks, the fourth of five children of Melvin and Connie Quakenbush. He graduated from West Valley High School in 1978. He played football and was an outstanding high school wrestler. He was a three-time state heavy weight wrestling champion. At the end of his high school career, Glen was awarded the Hertz Athlete of the year for the State of Alaska. Following high school, Glen earned a full athletic scholarship to Arizona State University, where he wrestled for two years and was ranked fourth in the PAC-10 conference in the heavyweight class. He was awarded Freshman Athlete of the year at ASU.

In 1981 Glen returned to Alaska to begin his training and career as a pipe fitter working out of United Association of Plumbers and Pipe fitters Local #375. He worked many long hours up and down the Alaska pipeline corridor, ending his career in the Fresno, California, local in 2019. While still in Fairbanks, Glen offered his experience and knowledge as an assistant wrestling coach for Lathrop and West Valley.

Throughout his life Glen leaned toward speed, thrills and new adventures. He enjoyed and was an accomplished member of the USAII four-man bobsled team, where he won races on the national and international bobsled circuit. He took his turn with ultralight aircraft and rode his dirt bike through the Arizona desert.

Glen married Marie Miller. They divorced in 2016, and he resided in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, until his death.

Glen had a soft spot for animals, but he had a special bond with dogs, especially his beloved bulldog, "Hanky," who undoubtedly feels the loss of Glen.

Some would say Glen was a difficult person to get close to, but when he decided someone was a keeper, they had a friend for life. He is missed terribly by his family and many close friends.

Glen was predeceased by parents Melvin and Connie Quakenbush and his Uncle Richard Coleman. He is survived by his Aunt Gail Coleman Barnett; brothers, Paul, Jay and Loran Quakenbush and sister Leslie McNelly; nephews, Justin, Tyler, Brandon and Isak Quakenbush; nieces, Sarah Quakenbush and Samantha McNelly.

A celebration of life for Glen will be scheduled at a later date.

Early spring in 1990. I heard about a guy who had a down hill sled track set up on a hill side in Fox, Alaska. One Saturday morning my daughter and I drove to Fox and found the hill. Glen had a snow machine and was pulling sleds up the hill. He motioned for us to ride up the hill with him, so we did. He gave me and my daughter excellent instructions on how to operate these sleds safely. My daughter and I got on a sled and down we went. When we got to the bottom, we were hooked! We went up and down that hill until sunset. Sledding with Glen as an instructor was some of the best fun I´ve ever had. I tried to race him down the hill several times but always ended up about 2 sled lengths behind him. He was fast but always under control. My daughter and I will never forget all the weekends we went sledding on Glen´s track that spring. Thanks Glen for some great memories!

I am stunned to my core at the news of Glen's sudden passing. We had been trading voice mails for most of last fall. I always liked Glen's approach to things. I consider myself lucky to have him consider me a friend. I've worked on his crews, partied hearty and shared many stories with him over the years. Visited that grand house in Lake Havasu City a few times, and got to know Marie too. My favorite story was about how he controlled haul road traffic one day on an Atigun Pass main line project when a line driver stopped to give him some "advice." I guess you had to be there!

But, man, I never wanted to hear this news, not ever.

My thoughts go to brothers Paul, Jay, and Loran.

I'll always remember the story of me almost not getting my first dog Holly for Christmas because you fell in love with her and didn't want to give her up! Rest easy Uncle Glen.

Was a wrestling teammate of Glen´s at Main Junior High and West Lathrop many years ago. Was shocked to hear of his passing. Would bump into him every now and then and he would always greet me as mad dog my wrestling nickname. He was a larger than life fellow and know he´s missed by the people that knew him. I worked with Glen on two different pipeline jobs. Not only was he a great boss to work for, but I considered him to be a friend. Glen had a hilarious sense of humor once you got to know him. He was really cool to work for. I was one of his sideboom operators on his tie-in crews. My heart goes out to the Quakenbush family.
