Glenn Berg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Stenberg Funeral Home - Big Timber on Mar. 3, 2026.
Glenn Raymond Berg, one of God's soldiers, was called home on February 26, 2026.

Glenn was born to Henry and Ruth Berg on August 4, 1945, in Harlowton, Montana, as the youngest of the 8 Berg children - 7 boys and 1 girl. He was raised on the family place in Shawmut and like many ranch kids, had a love of all things agriculture and specifically farming. He graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1963 and tried college for one week. He told his family "I'll go, but I'm not going to stay." He later joined the Army Reserves.

His senior year of high school, Glenn met the love of his life, Holly Lindner. It was Holly's initiation day of her freshman year in Big Timber. Glenn and his friend Royal Westervelt poured "goop" all over her head. Holly said they became friends, and years later when she was a senior, they went on a few dates. Later, when she was in college and Glenn was working on the I-90 highway, he called her up, they went on a date, he didn't pour "goop" on her head this time, and "the rest was history."

Glenn and Holly married on August 17, 1969. The newlyweds worked for Gilbert Opland in Gibson country, then worked for Holly's father, Robert. The pair later bought some land southwest of the Lindner place from Holly's uncle. Her dad gave them six cows, and his dad matched that "donation" which is how they started ranching.

Although he liked ranching, Glenn really loved farming. He started cutting wheat with Ben Arnold northeast of Billings and went all the way to Melville with him. Glenn bought some land from his brother, Lloyd, and took off farming on his own. Cremers gave him a chance to farm some more and he custom farmed for many years. Even when he "retired" he still helped friends and family cut hay and farm as needed.

Glenn enjoyed team roping and went to just about any branding he got invited to. He broke a few colts in his day for roping as well and kept his fondness of horses alive until the day he died. Glenn had a love of card games; it was in his blood! He never missed his weekly card games with his family and friends. Although Glenn's unforgettable laugh and love of a good time will always be something he is memorialized by, his real passion was helping people. The fire in his servant's heart was lit after battling alcoholism in his younger years.

Glenn got sober on June 16, 1983. He came home from a month-long stint in rehab at the Fountain Lake Treatment Center in Minnesota. He was originally signed up to stay 3 weeks, but stuck around for another week, where he found a calling for counseling - something that laid the foundation for the rest of his days. He came back to Big Timber and dedicated the rest of his life to helping others get sober.

Holly said his desire to help others and to counsel was overwhelming. So much so that in the last few weeks of his life, 43 years after getting sober, he was still counseling from his hospital bed, as his Alcoholics Anonymous group met in his room at the Pioneer Medical Center. The exact number of people Glenn helped in their addiction struggles is unknown, but it's estimated to be in the hundreds.

Glenn is remembered as a man of strength, generosity, and empathy. He loved helping people in any way he could, Holly said, that's the reason she loved him so much. Although the road to sobriety was rocky, each step took him there. God was there the entire time, just as God is with him now.

Glenn is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ruth; brothers John, Dick, Arn, Ben, and Harry Berg; and sister, Tookie Gee. He is survived by his wife, Holly; brother, Lloyd; countless nieces and nephews; and dozens of members of his AA family.

Funeral services for Glenn Berg are set for Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Big Timber Evangelical Church. Memorials can be sent to Meals on Wheels, the Big Timber Evangelical Church, or Montana on a Mission.
