William Taylor Obituary

William "Bill" Vernon Taylor, a lifelong fixture of Sweet Grass County, passed away of natural causes in Big Timber on December 19, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born in Billings on April 17, 1943, to Louis and Edna Taylor, Bill was famously said to have arrived "with a wrench in one hand and a fly rod in the other." A 1961 graduate of Sweet Grass County High School, Bill's youth was defined by the rugged Montana landscape. Whether he was turning wrenches with his father, navigating his Willy's Jeep through the deep backcountry, or building trails where none existed, Bill was never one to let rough weather or tough terrain stand in his way.

After graduation, Bill served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a fire rescue airman in Texas and Vietnam. Upon his return, he settled right back into the community he loved, spending the next 45 years as a mechanic at the local Ford dealership. He took immense pride in his work; his callused, crooked fingers were his badges of honor. He often joked that one hand had been worn into "metric" while the other stayed "standard."

Bill married the love of his life, Sally Ann Allestad, on June 6, 1970. Together, they spent 55 years exploring the foothills and mountains, teaching their three daughters the art of the outdoors. Though a skilled hunter, fly fishing was Bill's true soul-work. He was a "catch and eat" fisherman, which meant his family and friends were the frequent beneficiaries of his many successful days fishing.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Glenda, Wendy, and Susie; his granddaughter, Michaela; and many beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally; his parents; and his sister, Edna Joann Boe.

Bill and Sally are now reunited, cruising the gravel roads of Sweet Grass County and watching the sun set over the Crazy Mountains. A 60-year member of the American Legion, Bill will be honored with a memorial service there on April 4th at 11:00 AM.
