Glenn Alma Butterfield, 89, of
St. Anthony, ID, passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and was welcomed home by a loving Heavenly Father and many family members who have passed on before. He was born July 20, 1935, in Shoshone, Lincoln, Idaho, and was the son of the late John Francis and Lucille Alice (Tripp) Butterfield.
Growing up during the Great Depression, Glenn and his family learned how to work hard to make enough money for their family to live on. His father, grandfather, and uncles, worked building the Sun Valley Lodge, and helped build movie sets for movies being produced in the new town. They also hauled dirt, bricks, potatoes, sugar beets, and more. After Shoshone, the family lived in Ketchum, Pocatello, Mackay, and then back to Pocatello. He later attended Pocatello High School.
In 1952 at the age 17, Glenn joined the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. He received his training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California. During his tour of duty, he achieved the rank of Petty Officer Third Class and served as a mail clerk on the USS Brinkley Bass destroyer. When the Korean War ended, they were sent to protect the island country of Taiwan from the Chinese.
When he returned to the States, Glenn attended junior college in San Diego, CA, and later attended Brigham Young University in Utah. He met Lois M. Nitz, from Troy, New York, at a young single adult activity. After Lois served as a missionary in the Eastern States Mission, she returned to BYU to finish her studies, and they married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 22, 1962. They eventually bought a home in Midvale, UT. Glenn taught at Valley Junior High School in Granger, UT, and Hillcrest High School in Midvale, UT where he established the Graphic Communications program his son-in-law, Chris, later participated in while Lois continued her studies at BYU.
In the summer of 1966, Glenn, Lois, and their three little girls-Tami, Pam, and Lois-packed up their belongings and moved 2,200 miles east to Troy, NY. Susie was born after the family moved to Troy. Glenn got a teaching job in the Troy City School District and later became an assistant principal. He owned and operated a printing press they kept in their basement and did various print jobs to supplement his teaching income (before copy machines). During the summers he often worked for his brother-in-law, Ken, filling swimming pools.
After retiring they moved to Florida to care for Lois's parents. A move to Clatskanie, OR came after Lois's parents passed on. They moved to
St. Anthony, ID, in November of 2023 when keeping up with the house and yard became difficult.
Glenn and Lois volunteered weekly at the hospital in Longview, WA, and enjoyed working with the people there. They often provided humanitarian aid items for the church. He loved the gospel and served in various callings in the church. He especially enjoyed serving a senior mission in the Scotland Edinburg Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Besides taking great care of his family, he enjoyed writing stories he would share with family and friends. He was proud of the children's chapter book that was published depicting a fictional scientific experiment with friends. "Rockhounding" and geology were also fun hobbies he shared with his little "pebble puppies" (grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
He was a kind, humble, patient Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend and Teacher
In addition to his parents, Glenn is predeceased by his siblings Johnny, Eddie, Gene, David, Hazel, Bob, and Arthur.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, his sister Donna Gilbert (Dee) and brother Paul (Normandia), four daughters: Tami Sorensen (Chris), Pam Brayton (Sam), Lois Bell (Jim), and Susan Jensen (Jason), his 17 grandchildren, 9 grandchildren-in-law, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-grandson-in-law, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no formal calling hours. The family will hold a private graveside service.
